After watching the documentary of "Do the math", I feel like it resonates very strongly with my ideals. Every company around the world has one focus and that is to maximize their profits to make as much money as possible. I do not blame them for their way of running their business since greed is human nature. But now that it is proven that climate change and global warming is happening, I feel like the people should act before it is too late. The three numbers presenting in the documentary 2 celsius, 565 gigaton, and 2795 gigaton all revolve around the limit of carbon dioxide that our world can endure before it starts to react to it. When I say the planet reacting to too much carbon emissions, I mean more natural disasters and increased casualties. I just hope that it doesn't come down to the point where Mother Nature will need to step in to stop the human race from polluting the world.

DeleteA truly remarkable talk. I still don't think that today we can do much to change the aspect of global warming by talking about this topic over and over again unless we can find an alternative resource to replacing the role of fossil fuels. We may be able to have more people involved in supporting us and agreeing with our opinion once we can persuade them to take action, but there is no way to suddenly stop the manufacture production and pollution, which are part of the causes in climate change, if there are human beings on the earth. Definitely, we should react to the problems no matter how long it will takes. However, this means we will have to pin on our hope on our scientists. these scientists can make mistake as well. And here comes a question what exactly we know about the negative influences of our new strategies will have on us. For example, we did not notice that burnng fossil fuels was a bad idea and that eating meats was a bad to our environment until we actually faced the problem directly. Thus, I suggest that we should also focus on the other aspects as more and more people are participating in changing the world.
ReplyDeleteHi Yizhen, as far as I know, we have the technologies to replace most - if not all - fossil fuels in the near future with alternative energies. The reason we don't hear about this is that the media are also manipulated by the people with the economic power…. I'll find a report or something on that topic that will give you details.
DeleteThe modern world that we live in today is still developing, improving and also becoming more demanding. Countries and companies around the world are all trying their best to make profit. If there are no further restrictions, laws, or organizations to protect the nature and make people realize that the world is actually running into danger. The problem of global warming and climate change are becoming more serious day by day if we continue to produce a large amount of carbon emissions. I think all more economical developed countries (MEDC) should further increase carbon emission restrictions in their countries, as well as developing more possible agreements and help other economical less developed countries (ELDC) to minimize their contributions to carbon emissions. The more restrictions and anti-global warming organizations are developed as a whole, the disasters of climate change will be much more easier to solve.

DeleteThanks for sharing the video, it was truly powerful. The video was really effective in the way they presented all their information. They discussed about the past, present and future respectively, and I think it was very influential that it was presented that way. When talking about the past, we are reminded of how things used to be, or supposed to be, and when discussing the present, awareness was raised to the current climate issues. Lastly, they presented solutions, and how we can successfully make a difference if we were united in making a change. I also thought the concept of the 3 numbers were innovative and effective. Those numbers play a significant role in factors affecting climate change and I think they have targeted to make those numbers very memorable. Another concept that was influential was the idea of hidden costs. Like the video in the other blog (Story of Stuff), we often don’t think or is aware of such hidden costs, and I think the video did a great good highlighting these values. Overall, I really liked the video and think that we should share it with the people around us. As we raise awareness, we build up momentum to make a change, and if we don’t make use of that energy, we will soon forget about it and get caught up in our busy lives.
