  3. Every now and then I try to keep a blog of my own, but fail horribly for a variety of reasons. Here's something I wrote that's related to that: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BHj4eDDLwM7VQ7hK1rbxJsdWZ9reXfTSWLzTFXkqkdA/edit?usp=sharing

  5. This is a piece where our we were asked to think about rewriting the ending to a short story. The short story is Eileen Chang's "Red Rose, White Rose." I chose this story because I felt that the ending was lacking, and adding a more dramatic end would create closure. The first few pages are of the alternate ending that I wrote, and the next few are of what I was thinking while writing them. The page numbers were based off the book "Love in a Fallen City" which contained multiple short stories, including "Red Rose, White Rose."

  6. Here is a poem about my least favourite thing in my room!

    Alarm Clock

    I sit in the shadows
    silent and vigilant
    My face broadcasts for him
but he heeds not my warning
    Finally the time is nigh
    Not too early
    Not too late
    I sing my same song
    It starts slowly with
    "BEEPBEEPBEEP BEEPBEEPBEEP BEEPBEEPBEEP"
    and grows faster
    I mean,
    I think it does.
He's never let me get past the beginning
    Is it my singing?

There is no pleasing my oppressive master
    He who jerks upright
    tortured by my voice.
    I sing when instructed
and am cursed for doing so.
If I do so torture him
    I refuse any blame
for it be by his own hand
The same which treats me with disdain.
He shuts me up so cruelly
    heavy-handed and clumsy
No performer deserves to be treated so
not one as talented as I.
    And so I sit again
    awaiting my next opportunity
    to sing hopefully just once
    with impunity.

  7. I watched a documentary called “Unrepentant- Canada’s Genocide” earlier last month. The fact that Aboriginals were badly treated by the Government of Canada and the church reminds me how lucky I am to live in the right place at the right time. Therefore, I’d like to share some of things that I’m thankful for.

To begin with, I am thankful that I live in a country where its citizens have many more freedoms than people from other countries. I don't live in a country where everything is censored, our country allows us to freely express our opinions to just about anything, whether it is comments on our government, religion or other beliefs. Being a visible minority, I am very thankful that I have the same rights just like everyone else safeguarded by our constitution.

I’m thankful that I have the right to education, which many children aren’t in different countries around the world. Even though university life can be painful sometime, it is still a great privilege to have. Moreover, I’m thankful that Canada has many top-class universities such as the University of Toronto, McGill University and most certainly, UBC. I can proudly say that Canadian universities are the envy of the world.

Our health care system is definitely something to be thankful for! Even our neighbouring country doesn't have free healthcare, which is something that I think we sometimes tend to overlook. Clean, fresh, available water is another thing that I think we as a society all take for granted. Canada is so lucky to have lots of natural resources because our economy is largely driven by it, and Canadian residents should be very thankful for this. At least I know I am!

Many people complain about living in Vancouver because of all the rain. However, I'm really grateful for living in Vancouver because it is the rain that makes us appreciate the sun a lot more. At the same time, living in Vancouver makes shopping in the States so much easier compare to other cities.

There’re so many other things that I’m thankful for, such as having a nice home to live in, our social benefits, nice weather etc. The list goes on and on, but deeply in my heart, I’m really thankful for all of that.

  8. I love writing poems so here's another one that I wrote! Great way to end the year off!

    Dear inventors of this product,

I am expressing my disappointment over your product I bought.
This product is Adulthood, which costs a lot.
The ad mentioned all the freedom it would bring.
My first reaction was I wanted this thing.

First learning about the product on TV,
It was very appealing, I had to agree.
Though after I bought it, it wasn't that legit-
The truth about this product they wouldn't admit.

After using it, my face was covered in zits.
Hair was shooting right under my arm pits.
I was aging fast, suddenly stopping at forty.
Back pains and bad hips - I was no longer sporty.

I grew fat and ugly with hair that was thinning.
Confused and scared, my head was spinning.
I did some research and found there was a cure.
But at a staggering sixty bucks, I found that obscure.

I demand you mail me the cure A.S.A.P.
As a kind of compensation, mail it for free.
In the meantime, I am hopelessly stuck this way.
Having no option but to write in dismay.

Please convey a message about the downsides of Adulthood.
I truly would appreciate it if you really could.

    Yours saddened
    Hans Choi

    1. Yes, I totally understand your dissatisfaction. Excellent idea! If you find out how to give that product back and exchange it for something better, please let me know :)
