Music and Emotions

In this exercise you will listen to 5 different pieces of music. Please write down images (e.g. colors, sceneries, symbols, concrete objects) and /or emotions (e.g. happiness, sadness, anger, fear, love, peace, etc) and/or reflections on certain characters or people that come to your mind while listening to each piece. Please make sure you write everything down that you associate with the first piece of music BEFORE you go on to the next. Then listen to the next piece and write down spontaneously what comes to mind then (again, with the focus on images, emotions, and characters/people) while listen to that one etc. When you have listened to all 5 pieces – and written your 5 texts – re-read the 5 texts and see if you can create a whole out of these 5 parts without losing the contrast.

Here 10 different pieces of music. Please choose any 5 of them:

  1. A)Kodo – O’Daiko
It’s raining. Something tense is about to happen. A thunderstorm threatens overhead and the scent of battle is in the air. A group of men wait, THEN, all of a sudden know that they are being attacked and run! They sprint through mud, calls behidnt em signal that the enemy is near. Raw power and energy is used as they push through the swamp and into a forest at the crescendo. Dodging tress they begin to lose each other but know they must keep running as the enemy is catching up. LOUDER! The enemy is close!!
Then comes an eerie calm, they feel their aggressors near and decide to hide, crouching in the foliage and listen. There is a pause, then, one of them is hit with arrow and falls, dead, to the ground. The rest spring up and run for their lives but the enemy is upon them and begin to pick them off one by one. The remaining few try to remain unseen, stealthily sneaking from thicket to thicket. Then, they burst out of the woods back into the open, running as fast as they can up a hill, nearing the crest! They look back and see their assailants at the forests edge. They begin to believe they can make it and sprint down the hill, but tri and end up tumbling down, bounding and flailing as they attempt to regain control. At the bottom of the hill lies a strong, rushing river into which they fall.
Only three men remain, but they are swept up by the murky waters! Underwater, all is confusion, none know which way is up or where they are going. Finally, two break the surface. The third does not re-emerge. The two remaining men make a bid for the opposing shore, but their chasers are now almost at the bank! One man reaches the shore! The other is almost there when a rock, heaved by one of the enemy, collides with his skull and he sinks into the river leaving a lingering trail of blood. The remaining man climbs, sopping wet, onto the riverbank. He tries to run and makes it almost to the top of the bank when, in slow motion, an arrow is unleashed by his pursuers. It buries itself in his back, protruding out the front of his chest and he falls, majestically, until hitting the river’s surface and being quickly swept away.

    B)Ravi Shankar – Mangalum
Immediately, swirling colour emerges; purples, oranges and reds mixed together in a vortex of spiraling dance. They form into mandalas, completely with intricate, pulsating patterns of beige on the swirling colours. As the words come in, they bring streams of insects; locusts and butterflies which weave their way around the mandalas in patterns of flight.
As the drum comes in, the mandalas duplicate and shrink to form more pathways which the insects perfuse into. They begin to alternate direction of flow and spinning with the changing rhythms of the drum beat. Then, as the speed increases, th colours begin to fuse in and out so that there is more of the lighter colours sometimes, and more of the dark at others. The mandalas then all split down the middle and waves of colour emulate outwards from their cores, moving with the insects between.
The flute brings in new heights of waves, some going under and some over the flowing insect paths. When the voices reappear, the frequency of the vibrations change and the mandalas reform to spin as they originally did, with the insects slowly leaving by way of the paths until the end of the song.

  2. C)Lakota Prayer:
Northern lights flicker across a silent, calm landscape of fresh snow. Greens and yellows from the dancing lights reflect off the shimmering snow. A solitary elk picks his way across the plane, leaving quiet footprints in the otherwise flawless snow. As he lifts his head to the sky, a warm breeze passes over the earth and the snow begins to melt, fading and revealing near-by creek. The frozen ground begins to come to life, with grasses and bushes slowly getting greener, splaying out their leaves and reaching towards the dancing sky. Flowers emerge and blossom, unveiling previously hidden beauty of every colour of the rainbow. The elk looks on, stoic and silent. The river being to gurgle as the ice melts and salmon jump in its happily flowing body. Small rodents begin to scurry along the ground, foraging for food in the newness of the year.
A bear comes into sight, ambling towards the river, her two cubs frolicking behind her. She teaches them to fish, and then catch fish and eat. She then joins the elk and watches her cubs play in the meadow, growing into strong bears. Eventually, coolness sets in, and the leaves begin to shrivel on the plants. At the first snowflake, the mother bear roars to her cubs and then set off to find shelter for the coming winter. The elk remains unmoved.
The snow begins to fall in earnest now, blanketing the landscape in a white serenity as the lights above continue to flicker and sway. The elk scuffs a hoof in the newly fallen snow. A year has passed in the span of the night, the circle has completed, and the sky continues to illuminate the beauty it overlooks.

    D)African Marimba – Buya Africa:
Two little kids playing with a straw woven ball in the dusty streets. They pass back and forth for a while, then one of them kicks it past the other and it goes behind a bush. When they go to retrieve it they find that the ball has fallen into a hole. They crawl into the tunnel and emerge into a savannah full of every type of creature imaginable, gathered around a waterhole and bathing, swaying, and dancing to music! The exchange a look and run, laughing into the magical kingdom. They join in the festivities while the sun shines down, not too hot but enough to brighten everyone’s spirits.
All the animals are having a blast, and suddenly, a dance off starts! The monkeys take center stage; hooting and flailing their arms as the xylophone enters with a fun and bouncy melody. The antelopes spring in, followed by two elephants, waving their trunks to the beat. When the saxophone solo begins the boys join hands and run to the front, dancing facing each other and grooving to the music. This is the most fun they have ever had! They laugh and shout, huge smiles on their faces.
As all the voices join in, every animal on the savannah joins in to their dance, all facing the same way and copying the boys. Birds swoop overhead! Crocodiles splash in the water! It’s a party for everyone. As the sun begins to slowly make its way to the horizon, the boys leave their still dancing horde and run back to the tunnel; they will return tomorrow to continue the fun.

  3. E)Danza de los Micos:
The sun rises over a temple, its rays hitting first the tip and then extending down a majestic staircase and creeping towards the base as the early morning dew evaporates off of the leaves of trees in the surrounding jungle. They illuminate every detail of the ancient ruin from its crumbling exterior to the cracks in the side.
As a chord strikes, a simple tortoise waddles by the temple and blinks up at its beauty. The sunlight reflects off of his sleepy eyes as he ambles up to the base, the neck craning to see the top. He ponders it lazily for a minute, when out of the jungle a butterfly comes fluttering along. Its wings of gold and black reflect the sunlight as it dances to the flute melody, following the path of the staircase up the temple’s front. All is aglow from the light. The turtle watches the butterfly fondly as it swoops and dives, drawing loops in the early morning air.
Another butterfly joins it, this one of pale pinks and brown, and they flirt together in the air, spiraling up and up the temple steps to the top, where they flow around each other, bathing in the sun. The tortoise gazes at them and smiles vaguely, appreciating every moment of this simple, serene dawn.
