  1. Dreams can sometimes be unrealistic and unexpected. Although we all dream, we still cannot explain why we have them. In the past, the Egyptians and many other cultures associated dreams with predicting the future. There are three main theories that try to explain why we might have dreams. One theory, Freud’s theory, believes that dreams are based on our desires, thoughts and motivations. Freud believes that humans are aggressive and negative in nature. Everything that happens within our dreams have a significant meaning correlating with our unconscious desires.
The second theory is opposite from Freud’s theory. The activation-synthesis model of dreaming, created by Hobson, suggests that dreams do not have significant meanings. Instead, dreams are random neurons being activated during sleep. These activations are perceived as dreams.
The last theory of dreams is the information-processing theory. Dreams is the process of decluttering the brain from all the information it holds. During sleep, the brain processes the information that we have collected throughout the day. As our brain consolidated the information, the byproduct would be images and scenes which we call dreams.

  2. All of these topics have one thing in common, they all benefit by sleep. When people get the proper amount of sleep they are better able to consolidate short-term memories into long-term memories. This occurs more often during REM sleep, which is when dreams mostly occur. The periods of REM sleep become more frequent throughout the night. Thus, if someone does not get enough sleep they will be less likely to consolidate information into long term memory. Although some memories are lost through sleep, the more important memories are strengthened. Also, the more someone thinks about something that happened to them during that day before going to sleep, the more likely it is to show up in their dreams. Not everyone can remember their dreams though; and the people that do, tend to not remember all of them. Nevertheless, sleep is an essential part of life and is needed to carry out day-to-day functions. If people lack a certain required amount of sleep their amygdala becomes more active, and thus they would have less control over their emotions. Freud’s theory is that dreams have meaning and tell something about that person and that dreams are the playground of the mind in which something from someone’s subconscious may slip out. For instance, if someone dreams of flying they may need a transition in their life. The next theory is the activation synthesis model in which dreams are said to not have meaning, but occur in order to make sense of random brain activity. The majority of people tend to agree more with Freud’s theory and choose to believe that dreams do have meaning. Ultimately, sleep is an essential part of human life to create dreams which are needed in order to bring out intelligence, thoughts, creativity, intuition, and everyday functions.

  3. Emotions are extremely troublesome things that many individuals prioritize too often, especially during arguments. Most people do not choose logic and reasoning over their emotions, which is unreliable and invalid, because more often than not, people are wrong, and will fight that they are right because they feel ashamed or hurt. That is being unreasonable and silly, they are being emotional wrecks that are seemingly incapable of rationality and setting aside emotion. People should be able to handle things respectfully and professionally, rather than using their emotion as reason, because it is clearly invalid. One's emotions should be accounted for, but they should not be the reason why something occurs, nor should they be prioritized above proper reasoning. It really bothers me when people choose to argument according to how they feel, rather than by facts and ethics.
